Malawi Day 1

Hello Everyone,

Today was my first real day in Malawi. Yesterday was mostly a travel day. We got up early and packed, I had bought too much stuff the day before so my suitcases were over weight, go figure lol. We drove an hour to the airport and then went through two security check points before we could even check into our flight. I had a hard time checking in for some reason, they couldn't find my booking but we got it figured out and went through customs an then another security checkpoint. I found some coffee and a pie to eat because well food, and then we went to the terminal area and had to go to another security checkpoint before boarding the flight.

When we got in the plane it was tiny and no one's suitcases fit in the overhead bins, mine included so they had to start checking them on the plane and taking them out. I had the only TV on the plane that didn't work so that was super cool, no movies for me. I slept most of the time so it worked out. As we were descending to land, we kept getting faster and faster, not slower, it was really weird and we had a lot of turbulence, the lady sitting across from me was not happy. She noticed the weird landing too and was very concerned, swearing to me as I agreed it was odd. We survived however.

We got some groceries and exchanged some money on the way to the school from the airport. The drive was very scary I am not going to lie. The driver was stressed because since we were delayed it was going to take us awhile to get home and he isn't allowed to be out at night. We were driving 90 miles and hour weaving in and out of traffic on windy roads. I kept thinking we were going to crash, however I was also extremely car sick, fighting back the heaving my body was trying to do. I also may have cried from lack of knowing what to do. However we made it home safe. The driver got in trouble for being out at night, which I felt really bad for because it was our fault he was out that late.

We are renting a house in the village, but it is currently being finished and cleaned, since it was just built, so for a few days we are staying at our professors house, who is actually the president of the university here in Malawi. She is the lady that started the Global Development Masters program at Southern so she is very involved in the students lives and she wanted us to come use our development skills to help her school. We are staying at her house until we can move into our house. It is very nice. I really want to stay here but it is not a "real African experience" we have been told, which is why we have to stay in the village. lol so we will see how that goes.

We went to buy mattresses in town today, got sim cards for our phones, and vegetables in the market. It was really fun. The people here are really nice and I am excited to see what the next few months will hold.

The campus here is beautiful, however we really haven't explored it yet, we have been trying to get things in order to get settled and I don't start work until Thursday. So we will see how it goes. Keep ya all updated!
